There is no wrong time to visit Duluth, but each season is a different trip. As hosts who live on Park Point year-round, here is what we tell guests about each one.
Summer (June to August): beach season
Summer is Duluth’s busiest season. Days are long and mild, Canal Park is buzzing, and Park Point’s miles of sandy beach are at their best. Lake Superior stays cold even in summer, so many people wade rather than swim. Expect big events like the Duluth Airshow and Bayfront Blues Festival, and book early because summer weekends fill fast.
- Best for: beach days, kayaking and paddleboarding, ship watching, outdoor dining.
- At the cottage: private dock on Superior Bay, kayaks, canoe and paddleboard, hammocks and the beach across the street.
Fall (September to October): color and calm
Fall is a local favorite. Crowds thin after Labor Day, the air turns crisp, and the North Shore lights up with color, usually from late September into early October, depending on the year. It is the perfect time for a scenic drive up Highway 61, waterfall hikes and cozy brewery evenings.
- Best for: fall colors, hiking, North Shore day trips. See our day trip ideas.
- At the cottage: cool nights by the fireplace, quiet beach walks.
Winter (November to March): Christmas City of the North
Duluth embraces winter. The holiday season brings Bentleyville Tour of Lights and the Christmas City of the North Parade, and the snowy months bring skiing at Spirit Mountain, snowshoeing, sled dog racing and steam rising off the lake on frigid mornings. Read our winter in Duluth guide.
- Best for: holiday lights, snow sports, cozy getaways and lower rates outside the holidays.
- At the cottage: two gas fireplaces, snowshoes, board games and snowy bay views.
Spring (April to May): quiet and affordable
Spring is Duluth’s quietest season and often the best value. The shipping season returns, so it is a great time to watch freighters pass under the Aerial Lift Bridge, and waterfalls on the North Shore run high with snowmelt. Pack layers, because spring weather on Lake Superior can change quickly.
So, when should you go?
Come in summer for the beach, fall for color, winter for holiday magic and spring for quiet and value. Whatever the season, a whole home on Park Point puts you minutes from Canal Park with room to spread out.
